At Woodlawn Landscaping, we take the time to understand each client’s unique needs, ensuring our designs balance both functionality and aesthetics. For this North Portland customer, the goal was to refresh their front yard with a more dynamic look, but to also flatten out the slope.

The Design
A key objective of this redesign was to level the slope and incorporate an informal retaining wall to prevent erosion. To achieve this, we opted for a natural arrangement of basalt boulders, complemented by ground cover that would establish itself and spread between the rocks. This solution provided the necessary functionality while avoiding the high costs of a traditional unit paver wall. Additionally, the design included a pathway for backyard access and new plantings in the bed between the street and sidewalk.
For the planting plan, we selected a mix of low-growing, flowering perennials and a striking Japanese maple as the front yard’s focal point. In the backyard, where low sunlight had made plant growth challenging, we introduced shade-loving varieties such as Pieris, ferns, Heuchera, and Hellebores.
The Result: Simply Lovely!
