Paver Patio + Sod

What a difference! Our client had a backyard full of potential, but it wasn’t being used much due to shifting pavers and a deteriorating lawn. That’s where Woodlawn Landscaping came in. This project had quite a few moving parts, and it evolved as we went. Midway through, the client decided to add retaining walls to replace the old curbs—which we were more than happy to accommodate. And take a look at the result: a beautiful outdoor area with a lush new sod lawn.

We started by removing all of the old pavers and excavating the area. The previous patio was built on pea gravel instead of angular gravel, which likely caused all the shifting over time. Since pea gravel isn’t a suitable base for hardscaping, we had to remove every bit of it. Once the area was cleared, we laid down landscape fabric and brought in the proper gravel base.

Moving the heavy precast stairs was a job of its own. We teamed up with Gentle John’s Moving here in Portland to get them placed just right on a pad we built specifically for them. (Shoutout to those guys—they were a huge help!)

Although it’s not pictured here, we also installed a drywell underneath the lawn to help manage drainage. Once the pavers were set, we rolled out fresh sod and called it a day. The clients were thrilled with the transformation—and so were we.
