Winter Tree Pruning

Best Done Late December - Early March

Pruning is the art and science of trimming trees for both health and aesthetics. Without an experienced arborist, you can permanently disfigure—or worse—kill a tree. Likewise, an experienced pruner can really bring out the best in your trees! Ideally, trees should be pruned annually. Well-maintained trees don’t take as long to prune. Often, people will wait a year or two between pruning, which can be perfectly fine depending on the size and growth rate of the tree. Trees that are neglected for too long can reach a point where we can only do so much to make them look better. Let us take your ornamental trees, hedges, or fruit trees to the next level! Tree pruning is best done in the winter months when trees are dormant.

Pruning involves an artistic yet systematic process of:

  1. Removing dead growth that does nothing to benefit the tree.
  2. Removing undesirable growth, such as "suckers" and "crossers," or any downward-facing branches.
  3. Shaping cuts that help the tree achieve its natural form, usually a vase-like shape.
  4. Thinning cuts—a tree should have a consistent amount of sunlight shining through its canopy. It should never block out the sun entirely.
  5. That being said, a tree should never lose roughly more than 1/3 of its foliage in a given season. Sometimes, it takes a few years to restore an overgrown tree.
